This class will introduce the field of Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT), a body/mind/spirit psychotherapeutic approach that integrates movement and embodied awareness with verbal expressions to facilitate psychological goals. This course is approved by the American Dance Therapy Association, for Alternate Route R-DMT credit when taken at a graduate level.

Dance/Movement Therapy and Trauma

Pre-requisite: 30 hours of DMT theory and practice, or permission of instructor.

Trauma significantly impacts our physical, emotional, and psychological identity as well as our interpersonal relationships. This course will explore dance/movement therapy and somatic therapy-based approaches for working with trauma from a multicultural perspective.

This course is approved by the American Dance Therapy Association, for Alternate Route R-DMT credit.

Dance/Movement Therapy 1: The Power of Movement

Dance/Movement Therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach that uses embodied creativity, body awareness, movement, and dance for change, growth, and healing. This class will introduce the field of Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT), and focus on techniques for using all forms of non-verbal expression and awareness to promote clinical goals. Non-verbal multicultural and diversity perspective will be emphasized throughout the course. This course is approved by the American Dance Therapy Association, for Alternate Route R-DMT credit.

Saturdays and Sundays, October 9-10 and 23-24, 2021

Dancing Difference: Diversity and Multicultural Awareness

This class will use embodied experiences, lectures, and discussion to increase embodied bias and prejudice awareness, multicultural humility, diversity, and power/privilege senstitivity. This course is approved by the American Dance Therapy Association, for Alternate Route R-DMT credit.

Prerequisites: 2 credits or 30 hours of Movement Observation; 2 credits or 30 hours of General Coursework and 2 credits or 30 hours of DMT Theory and Practice; or permission of instructor.

Variety Dance Camp with Young Dance

This variety dance camp allows dancers to experience styles from around the world and brings together some of the best Twin Cities dance educators, including Karla Nweje, Marciano Silva dos Santos, Rayna Howard, and Blake Nellis.

With an all-star group of educators, dancers will get a taste of Percussive Dance, Old School, Afro-Brazilian, Modern, Hip Hop, and Improvisation.

This program is offered in a hybrid format, with both in-person and online options for participation.

Create! Dance and Photography Workshop with Young Dance

Create! Dance and Photography Workshop
An introduction to interdisciplinary artistic practices and the overlaps between movement and visual art.

Experience the joy and fun of dance, while learning the elements of photography and how images can inspire choreography and creativity! Each day will consist of a group photo walk to help participants focus on their photography goals and let them practice the new skills they’ve learned. During these photo walks, they will develop and hone their visual acuity, looking for the light, shadows, shapes, and more. The participants will then apply the elements of photography to movement sessions in creation and dance technique.

*Digital device with photography capabilities recommended, but not required.
Participants will receive a link to photographs taken during the workshop by the instructor of this camp, professional photographer Blake Nellis.

Threads Dance Project Presents Workshops with Solomon Dumas

Join us at the Threads Dance Nexus with Solomon Dumas!

The Karen L. Charles Threads Dance Project presents two movement workshops with Solomon Dumas, Company Member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

The first class is a community workshop that is designed for movers of all ages and will take place Friday, July 30 from 6:00-7:30pm.

Saturday’s workshop will target pre-professional and professional dancers ages 16+ and take place from 10:00-11:30am on July 31.

Both workshops will take place at the Threads Dance Nexus, located in the Seward Neighborhood in South Minneapolis. Each workshop will be followed by a twenty minute Ask the Artist conversation. These workshops are being offered free and open to the public, with a suggested donation of $20. Space is limited.

Ballet Royale offers Grand Prix Solos and Variations Intensive

Ballet Royale, Minnesota’s premier ballet academy, is offering a focused ballet and variations workshop, specializing in preparing dancers for performing or competing in national ballet competitions.

Following daily classical ballet technique class, dancers learn classic ballet variations and receive advanced personal coaching. This workshop benefits all dancers, whether preparing for a competition, an upcoming performance, or simply wanting to polish and improve their artistry, technique, and quality.

Recommended for intermediate through advanced and professional dancers, ages ten and up. By audition or invitation only. Please contact the studio for more information.

TU Dance Center: Pre-Professional Summer Intensive

The TU Dance Pre-Professional program is an intensive course of study integrating modern, ballet, African dance, and creative workshops for students ages 11 to 24. The TU Dance Summer Intensive builds a strong technique while exploring individual artistry.
