Indian Classical Dance and Theater Performance

Nritya Kalakshetra of Performing Arts (NKAPA) was established in 2005 to promote multi-disciplinary theatrical art works ranging from folk, classical, and contemporary art forms to art lovers and patrons. NKAPA has raised the propensity towards the Indian classical dance Bharatanatyam and delivered many renowned classical dance forms to the Minnesota community through its students. NKAPA school has collaborated with state art schools, local communities, and organizations in Minnesota to conduct many charity events across schools, colleges, temples, etc. NKAPA is collaborating with interdisciplinary art forms and choreographers and working with acclaimed organizations in Minnesota as well as many other communities in Texas, California, Illinois, and Canada.

NKAPA school was founded by Sivanuja Balaji. She has been teaching, performing, choreographing, and promoting art forms for more than 28 years. A well-trained alumna of world famous Kalakshetra and a disciple of great Maestro Late Adyar K Lakshman and Krishnaveni Lakshman, Sivanuja is also trained in Mohiniattam, folk dances of India, and Carnatic music.

NKAPA school has been an active contributor across many social/regional events in the twin cities and other parts United States and India. NKAPA offers classes across Woodbury, Eagan, Edina, and Plymouth; and its students are involved in variety of performances ranging from Kalakshetra-style Bharatanatyam, Mohiniattam (Indian classical forms) and Kuchipudi, through contemporary dances and performances. The school has contributed to the growth of this ancient art through focused teaching on the depth of Bharatanatyam, Natyashastras, facial expressions – called Abhinaya, and yoga to improve dance posture and stamina. The classes delivered by NKAPA also focus on the theory of dance and theatre performances.

NKAPA school is currently working on having structured level exams for Bharathnatyam.

The Arena – Drop in GYROKINESIS® Method with Non Edwards

Mathew Janczewski states, “I feel like a super hero after taking this class with Non Edwards.”

Exercises can be performed seated on an armless chair or stool, standing, and on hands and knees. We will work on the seven spinal movements, joint articulation, and cultivating strength with coordinated breath while transitioning through sequences with fluidity. Gyrokinesis addresses the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion, and creating functional strength through rhythmic, flowing movement sequences. Non Edwards is a dancer, choreographer, and Gyrokinesis Method Trainer working in the Twin Cities since 2009.

At the Arena
Pre-register!

Suggested $17 per class, but ARENA DANCES offers a pay-as-able option on all classes. We would rather you join us than not be able to attend due to financial limitations.

Class focuses on opening up curiosity, finding internal pathways within the body and the contrast of those same pathways. An assortment of texture, speed, density, length, force and resistance will be taught to open these skills.

Mathew’s work as Artistic Director of ARENA DANCES is best described as contemporary, spanning an array of styles – from quietly evocative to physically demanding, full of spiraling momentum that draws energy into the core and spreads it out like disco ball beams of light. At times, movement focuses on the dancers’ bends and folds, creating shape as one shifts and moves, forging moments of connection.
