Friday Morning Jazz is Going on Pause – Two Classes Left

Dear Community:

Erinn Liebhard and Karla Grotting are so grateful for the past eight years of co-teaching Friday Morning Jazz Class at Zenon together. We have decided to put FMJ on “pause” for a bit; we’re both spinning a lot of plates right now and had to set one down so the rest don’t drop. “Pause” means we intend to teach an open jazz class together again sometime in the future, continuing to offer the community a chance to engage with a jazz-music-forward, history-infused jazz class inspired by both social and concert dance ideas – we are invested in the presence of great open jazz class offerings for our community!

We have two more classes at Zenon before this “pause”:
December 9 with Erinn
December 16 with Karla and Erinn – this last day will wrap with a little celebration gathering after class: stay, socialize, feel community!

Thank you all: regulars, drop-ins, folks we see once every two years, and all of you who keep up with us in our Facebook group. We’ve thrived by sharing in this great sense of community and in the joy of dancing together. We appreciate you all, look forward to seeing you around the community, and will be back with an open public class for you when the timing is right!

Two More Chances for Pop-up Modern Class

Mary Willmeng is running a three-class series this December!

Saturdays from 10:00-11:30am
Remaining dates: December 10, and 17

Mary’s class will explore groundedness, release, and fluidity through the body with a structured warm up, improvisational exercises, and choreographed phrase work. Phrase work will include full-bodied movement and gesture to allow for a full range of expression. Students will be encouraged to play within the container of choreographed movement to find their own voice within the offerings of class. Class is suitable for all levels. Classes will be held at Jawaahir Studios.

This link will connect you to the studio website with a map of the location.

Classes will be pay as you can with a suggested amount between $5-$10. You may pay with cash, check, Venmo, or PayPal. If you have taken my class before, you will see some familiar phrases, as well as some new material. Let’s keep moving together as the cold and dark months creep in!

Please reach out with any questions. My email ismarywillmeng@gmail.com. I look forward to dancing together!

New Creative Movement Classes and More at Young Dance

Four class images of young dancers paired with the Young Dance logo

Since 1987, Young Dance has encouraged youth in our community to build body and spirit through the art of dance. Our mission is to transform lives through movement. We are an inclusive community where creativity flourishes, encouraging personal and artistic excellence through diverse forms of dance.

Classes are already running and many are at capacity!

There is still room for students in Afro-Modern on Wednesday evenings from 7:00–8:30pm. Taught by Aneka McMullen, Afro-Modern Dance is a contemporary class where dancers explore full-body expression rooted in West African, Caribbean, and American dance traditions. Participants should be 10–18 years old.

Also for students ages 10–18, Ballet 2 is taught by Hannah Pierce and meets on Tuesdays from 6:30–8:00pm. Young Dance teaches ballet skills from a body-positive lens that builds terminology, coordination, flexibility, and rhythm.

We are excited to add Hip Hop 3 and Jazz dance to the roster in January!

Hip Hop 3 is for students ages 13–18 and meets on Mondays from 7:00–8:30pm. Taught by Waswa Kalema, the class is a high-energy introduction to many styles of Hip Hop including breaking, popping, locking, and house.

Jazz dance, taught by Anat Shinar, combines rhythm and rootedness with light and flowing movements to create a full-bodied and unique movement language. Jazz will be offered on Thursdays from 5:00–6:30pm and is for students ages 8–14.

New sections of Creative Movement 1, geared for dancers ages 3–5, will be offered from 4:30–5:30pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

New classes begin Monday, January 2, and continue through Sunday, May 21, 2023. The final weekend of the session culminates in performances at the Luminary Arts Center.

Registration is open!

The artists of ADT, a women of color led dance company, pose with strong arms and intense faces

Wednesday Water Dances
Wednesdays, 9:30-11:00am CT with Kealoha Ferreira

A weekly dedication to the vitality and life force of Water. In class, we will offer breath, dance, meditation, story, song, and reflection. Each class will take shape a little differently, staying responsive to the ongoing movements protecting the value and longevity of water worldwide. Facilitated by Kealoha Ferreira, an Ananya Dance Theatre Artist, Wednesday Water Dances will begin with grounding movement, flow into dedicated time for personal practice/research/reflection, and close with collective sharing. All who are committed to deepening their relationship with water are welcome to participate.

Yorchhā* Elements | Yorchhā Integrations
Integrations every Friday, 6:00-7:00pm CT with Kealoha Ferreira
Elements every Saturday, 9:00-10:00am CT with Parisha Rajbhandari

Yorchhā Elements | Yorchhā Integrations is a new approach to the previous Intro and Advanced class structure. Now, these classes are in conversation with each other, breaking down Yorchhā elementals like footwork or torso articulation in the Saturday “Elements” class and then adding continued complexity in the following Friday’s “Integrations” class.

*Yorchhā is Ananya Dance Theatre’s trade-marked contemporary technique that intersects principles of vinyasa yoga, classical Indian dance form Odishi (from the eastern Indian state of Odisha), and martial art form Chhau (also from Odisha).

Yoga: Aligning With Land
Sundays, 3:00-4:00pm CT with Kealoha Ferreira

From Tadasana (mountain pose), the first asana in Surya Namaskar (sun salutation) A, we connect our feet to the ground and shift our internal landscape to find equity with the land that sustains us. Our practices of relationality and reciprocity are also building blocks for sustainable and regenerative body practices. This Vinyasa class introduces and deepens the fundamentals of structural and energetic alignment in Yoga while moving towards right-relationship between place and community. All are welcome to participate. Variations and modifications will be provided for multiple access points in each class. Mats and blocks are encouraged with limited supplies available at the Institute.

Students attending in-person classes must wear face masks during class. No exceptions.
Contact Kealoha at kealoha.ferreira@ananyadancetheatre.org for an online class link, or with questions about accessibility.
